Some quotes
I was looking for a specific quote earlier to use in my signature at
Crosswalk.com's forums and found some that I liked. Because I haven't had much to write about in here lately I thought I'd share some of the more interesting quotes with y'all here:
You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.
~ Sam Levenson
Looking back, I have this to regret, that too often when I loved, I did not say so.
~David Grayson
It is one of the blessings of old friends that you can afford to be stupid with them.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Treasure each other in the recognition that we do not know how long we shall have each other.
~ Joshua Loth Liebman
Where the heart is willing it will find a thousand ways. Where it is unwilling it will find a thousand excuses.
Giving someone all your love is never an assurance that they'll love you back. Don't expect love in return, just wait for it to grow in their hearts. But... if it doesn't, be content that it grew in yours.
Love is when you take away the feeling, the passion, the romance and you find out you still care for that person.
A small trouble is like a pebble. Hold it too close to your eye, and it puts everything out of focus. Hold it at proper viewing distance, and it can be examined and classified. Throw it at your feet, and it can be seen in its true setting, just one more tiny bump on the pathway to eternity.
~ Celia Luce
Time invested in improving ourselves cuts down on time wasted in disapproving of others.
In the long run we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.
~ Eleanor Roosevelt
The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.
If you really put a small value upon yourself, rest assured that the world will not raise your price.
When asked to share the top reason for their marital success, the men and women said, "My spouse is my best friend." When the dust settles from a passionate courtship, what's left - and what will keep that marriage growing and vital - is friendship.
~ Jan Yager
To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; to leave the world a little better; whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is the meaning of success.
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Don't judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.
~ Robert Louis Stevenson
Yes, it's been awhile since I've updated my blog :)
Sacramento was treated to a huge storm last Sunday, and the most intense rain cell passed over the area in which I live. I'm glad I procrastinated going to Walmart, or I would have been caught in a mess.

It was a cool and cloudy day, and I was doing some work on my computer while watching an episode or two of season 1 of CSI. I glanced out the window and noticed it was beginning to sprinkle, so I went into the backyard to get the desk I've been sanding and painting out of the yard and into the house. Good thing I did!
It's rare to have a thunderstorm in Sacramento, so the distant rumble of thunder caught my attention. As I was wandering around online I heard a slight bit of static over the speakers so I shut the computer down and turned off the power strip, just in case. Again, good thing I did!
The distant thunder was a harbinger of the biggest storm I've ever seen in my life! At first there wasn't much rain, just a sprinkle here and there, but the thunder was loud and booming, and the lightning was so close at one point it sounded like the pop of gunfire, followed immediately by a huge roll of thunder

I called my sister on my cell and was standing on the porch talking with her when I saw a huge bolt of lightning that must have struck the ground about 2 or 3 miles north of where I live, followed immediately by another huge roll of thunder. By this time Riley was hidden underneath the loveseat and Blossom was dashing from spot to spot, stopping to stare around in panic trying to figure out what was going on.
After a few minutes of the huge thunder and lightning storm it moved southeast and everything calmed. I thought it was over…boy, was I wrong! Within minutes it began to rain, and it was heavy. It wasn't much longer when it also began to hail, and pieces of hail the size of dimes began piling up. Then the floodgates opened and rain began falling so fast and so heavy that I could barely see the houses across the street

I have NEVER in my life seen that much rain come down so hard! According to newscasts I heard later in the day, in some places we had nearly 2 inches of rain fall in half an hour.
Finally the rain stopped and most of the clouds blew over, releasing the sunlight and blue skies

I turned the computer on again and was sitting at the desk reading in the forums at Crosswalk.com, when I noticed something outside. I went outside and the street was flooded! (There are some pictures here) Directly in front of my house the gutters were flooded, and then the street was flooded in front of my neighbor's house to the left. After about an hour the flooding went down, so I decided a trip to the grocery store was in order. I drove down the street and discovered that the major cross street was flooded too high for my little Neon to navigate, so I turned around and went to a small family grocery store instead.
I turned the local news on at 5pm and watched the coverage about the storm and the impact. The downtown and midtown areas had flooding so high that some people were traversing the streets in a canoe. A nearby supermarket had a small part of their roof collapse, part of the lower levels of the state capital building flooded, trees fell over, and water was spewing out of the drainage holes back onto the street, they were so flooded. There were a couple of funnel cloud sightings near Escalon.
It was quite an adventure!

And by Monday morning it looked as if it had never happened.
Remember my entry about Rodrick? Sadly we found out last week that the new property management company felt we no longer needed security patrols and they ended the contract with the company Rodrick worked for. On his last day he said his goodbyes to people as he monitored the parking lot, and thanked each of us for treating him so well and for being so nice to him. He expressed his appreciation and enjoyment of being here, and was confident that God had another job lined up for him.
All of us will miss him.
This brought something else to mind...never hesitate when you have an impulse to do a kindness. For a few weeks I'd had the idea to do something nice for Rodrick, like make some cookies and give him a card, and I kept putting it off for the future. Because I put it off so long I missed out on the chance to bless and encourage him

Today is the official first day of autumn, and it's in the air. The mornings are beginning to get a little nippy, it's cool enough at night that I no longer need to have a fan blowing on me, the sun is sleeping in in the mornings, and night is falling by 8pm. I wore pants and a light sweater instead of a dress for the first time in months this week.
If all works out, my sister and I are planning to visit Apple Hill this weekend

One of the best gifts God gives is contentment, and I've been enjoying that lately. I'm content with my life. Not in a rut, not stagnant...growth is important, but I'm content

Spyware...it's a curse. And the biggest curse of all that I can't get off my computer is a browser hijack to sirsearch.com.
In a search for instructions on deleting it I've found a small program called "
Hijack This" and an informative website -
TomCoyote.org. I'll be posting my information soon enough and will hopefully get the help I need to get this curse off my computer.
In the meantime I've been using the
Opera browser, which has a pleasant and user-friendly interface.
I've decided that it's time to consider buying a new computer. I intend to use my Christmas bonus for that purpose, along with a company corporate discount they make available to employees for Dell computers. I'm still a bit reluctant to buy a Dell based on my experience with the computers at work, but maybe their higher grade home computers will be better. One of the IT guys where I work has a Dell at home and hasn't had any problems with it, so it's worth looking into.
I'm now a happy DSL person! For years I've been connecting to the internet via dialup and my 56k modem, and the last time I tried to get DSL (2 or so years ago) I was too far from whatever I needed to be near in order to get DSL (the switching station?). Things have changed and I finally connected with DSL last Monday

It's been fun seeing how much faster everything is, and how much quicker the downloads have been.
I have to share a really cute photo with you. It's titled, "Riley in a Box"

He's my baby!
