Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of
mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not
only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.
~ Philippians 2:3-4
What a difference from the way the world views life! We're told that we need
to look out for number one, that it's a dog eat dog world, and the only thing
that matters is getting to the top. If you have to step on a few backs along
the way, well, that's life, and no one should be surprised. After all,
whoever has the most toys wins!
God challenges us to look at life differently, to care for others and to look
out for their interests with as much diligence as we look out for our own. We
are to lay aside our empty ambitions, our selfish conceits, and to regard
ourselves with humility. We need to let go of our need to be first, to be
better than others, and start letting the interests of others take precedence.
That's when we truly begin to experience growth as a christian, and learn the
joy of giving.
So, today, on your way to work, let that person get onto the freeway in front
of you, and smile at them. Stop for the woman who wants to use the crosswalk
- another 30 seconds or so won't make a difference in your morning, and you
will have given the gift of consideration. When you're waiting in line at the
grocery store, let someone into the line ahead of you - you'll not only
surprise them and brighten their day, but you'll brighten yours as well.
Lord, thank You that You laid aside your power and position, and looked out
for our interests above your own....you chose to come to earth as a man, and
died for our sins, that we might live and know Your glory. Help us to lay
aside the selfish ambitions and conceits that would hinder us from becoming
more like Your Son, and to look out for the interests of our fellow men, and
to encourage them with a kind word or a smile whenever we can.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
