Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For
if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone
when he falls, for he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down
together, they will keep warm; but how can one be warm alone? Though one may
be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not
quickly broken.
~ Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
A good friend can be hard to find, but is worth looking for. A kindrid
spirit, as Anne of Green Gables phrases it. Someone who understands you
without words, someone who knows you and loves you anyway. You can spend
months apart, but when you finally see each other again, it's like no time at
all has passed.
God blesses us with a few special people like that. People you can laugh
with, cry with, argue with, and their love for you never changes. They are
there to lift you up when you fall, to encourage you when everything seems
hopeless, to tell you the truth when you need to hear it.
Friendship is a wonderful gift from God, and when your friendship shares the
common ground of your christianity, it becomes even stronger. You and your
friend are two strands of the cord, and God is the third strand, so deeply
entwined with the two of you that He can't be taken out.
And a friendship like that will sustain you through the darkest times you'll
ever face...you'll truly see the love of God through your friend, and will be
blessed beyond belief.
Lord, thank You for the friends you have given us - each one brings something
different and special into our lives, and each one is important. Help us to
treasure each friendship we have, and to let our friends know we appreciate
them. Teach us to be the kind of friend who loves unconditionally, who shares
in each joy and sorrow, and who will walk alongside, encouraging and laughing,
sharing the love You have given us.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
