Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as (something
done) for the Lord and not for men, knowing (with all certainty) that it is
from the Lord (and not from men) that you will receive the inheritance which
is your (real) reward. (The One whom) you are actually serving is the Lord
Christ (the Messiah).
~ Colossians 3:23-24
Do you like your job? I'll be honest and admit that I don't like my job very
much. It's not exciting, it's not fun, it's not meaningful. I get up each
morning and drag myself to work, wishing I could stay home and do what I want
to do, not what I have to do. And once I'm at work, I find ways to avoid
doing my job wholeheartedly. Why bother? I sometimes wonder. What's the
point?
The point is - we aren't working for our boss - as a Christian, we are
working for the Lord. He has blessed us with that job and is providing for
our needs through that paycheck. We need to do our work each day, knowing
that it's for Him alone.
When we view our jobs in that light, we can give of ourselves wholeheartedly,
knowing that while our job may not make much of a difference in light of
eternity, our attitude and our willingness to obey our Lord will make a
difference, not only in our own lives, but in the lives of those we work
with. And our reward is not that paycheck....our reward is knowing that we
are serving wholeheartedly in the place the Lord has planted us, and that we
are pleasing Him.
Lord, as we go to work today, help us to lay aside the attitudes that hinder
us from wholeheartedly doing our job, knowing that You are our true
authority. Help us to be eager and willing workers, looking out for the
interests of those we work with and living out the example of servanthood You
laid before us. Help us to be willing vessels to be filled with Your love
and grace, and help us to share that with everyone we meet. Let Your light
shine so brightly through us that all who see us see You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
